York Neighborhood – Bellingham, WA

York is a great little community just east of Downtown Bellingham. The neighborhood is still very much centrally located as it is still west of Interstate 5. Lakeway and then Whatcom Falls are the two towns further east and in line with York.

York is a fair mix of homeowners and renters given its appeal to nearby Western Washington University students, young couples and families alike. Lots in this middle-class neighborhood tend to be smaller (about 4,480 square feet) but most homes are abundant in character and distinct Victorian style. Much of the architecture is the original build from over 100 years ago, as York is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Bellingham. It was built up before Bellingham was even an official city.

The neighborhood park is also full of history. Originally school grounds, the land between Whatcom Street and Franklin Street was long known as Franklin Park. In very recent years, the park was renamed after Harriet Spanel, a dedicated member of the community. A new sign and new playground accompanied the honoring name change.
